DREAM TEAM VI MOVE CLOSER TO BRAZIL

Habeeb Akinfegbe

Nigeria's team vying for a place in next year's Olympic football team, Dream team VI qualified for the last four of the U-23 AFCON, hence a victory against Senegal in the last four gives the team an automatic ticket to the Olympics.

It was gathered that Samson Siasia's lads failed to take their chances throughout the 90 minutes as they shared the spoils with the Fennec Foxes of Algeria in their last group B game of the Africa U23 Championship played at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar, and will now face Senegal in the semi final on the 9th of December.

With both teams tied on four points, either side came into the clash knowing a win would all but assure them of a place in the last four. Unlike much of the action previously seen at the finals, what followed was a disjointed affair devoid of any real pattern, although the Nigerians created the clearer goalscoring opportunities but failed to convert. Algeria  goalkeeper Abdelkadir Salhi  put in an excellent display and made a superb save in each half, scooping Junior Ajayi’s strike away following a pinpoint Muhammed Usman pass  in the first period before keeping out Eyo Ebong’s effort in the second half.

Nigeria dominated the latter stages, but ultimately Samson Siasia’s side failed to deliver the goal they  desperately craved, and the stalemate leaves the two teams locked on five points with the North Africans topping the group on goal difference. Oussama Darfalou and Oussama Chita too threatened but a better organised backline as well as some fine saves from Emmanuel Daniel frustrated Pierre Andre Schurman’s team from wreaking havoc. Ajayi brought a smart stop out of Salhi in stoppage time as the game became stretched, but both sides had to settle for a draw that means they each booked a place to the semifinal.

Nigeria face unbeaten hosts, Senegal in the last four while South Africa square up against Algeria for a place in the final on Wednesday December 9, 2015. The finalists will secure automatic places to the 2016 Olympics with the third placed team getting the last spot to the quadrennial multisport event in Brazil.
