U-23 CHAMPIONSHIP:DREAM TEAM ON THE MARCH AGAIN

Habeeb Akinfegbe

Samson Siasia and his boys have made history after winning the 2nd edition of the CAF U-23 Championship in Senegal by defeating Algeria 2-1 with goals coming from Oghene Etebor (tournament's highest goalscorer with 5 goals). It was Nigeria's first win at the competition.

The team did not only qualify for the Rio games but also as continental Champions. Furthermore, the second trophy won by the country in Senegal this 2015. Samson Siasia was equally able to better his coaching record by never failing to win in two continental competitions' final; following his success in Benin 2005 CAF U-20 championship, when the Isaac Promise led team defeated Egypt 2-0 in the final.

The nation as a whole wrapped things up for 2015 on a high after continental and global successes in various categories from the African U-20 championship to the FIFA U-17 world cup.

The team was able to grind out the needed results throughout the competition despite not being convincing most times. The coach may however need to work on some areas in order to put up a better performance come Rio 2016. Incidentally, the last time Nigeria competed at the games was in 2008 and the team was led to a second place finish by Siasia after losing 1-0 to Argentina.
