EURO 2016 UPDATE

Habeeb Akinfegbe

It's day 6 of the Euro 2016 taking place in France and actions move to group F where Austria play Hungary and Portugal face Iceland in the matches 11 and 12 respectively. There are 17 players on a goal each on the highest goal scorer chart after 10 matches.

La Roja have not suffered a single UEFA EURO defeat since the 20th of June, 2004, when they were beaten by Portugal. Winners of the last two continental contests, they extended their unbeaten run on Monday with a victory over Czech Republic in Group D. .As expected, Spain did what they do best against Czech Republic: keep hold of the ball and spread it around, using the practically flawless Andres Iniesta – who made 42 successful passes out of 44 attempts in the first half – as their creative fulcrum. But it took the reigning champions until the 87th minute to finally find a way past Petr Cech, Gerard Pique nodding home the only goal of the match following a superb cross by Iniesta.

And it was that aforementioned pair of countries that brought the curtain down on Matchday 4. At EURO 2012, Italy were comfortably beaten 4-0 in the final by Spain, while the Belgians failed to qualify. Although their current lofty position of second in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking made Les Diables Rouges slight favourites in the eyes of many, the experience of Gianluigi Buffon, who is playing in his fourth European Championship and his third as captain (a record), and the composure of Emanuele Giaccherini were sufficient to respectively keep the Belgians at bay and find a way past Thibaut Courtois. In injury time, Graziano Pelle sealed the points for the Italians.

Here are the results of the matches played so far:
France 2-1 Romania
Albania 0- 1 Switzerland
Wales 2-1 Slovakia
 England 1-1 Russia
Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland
Germany 2-0 Ukraine
Turkey 0-1 Croatia
Spain 1-0 Czech
Republic of Ireland 1-1 Sweden
Belgium 0-2 Italy

Away from the football field, the Russian Football Union have been handed a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 and fined €150,000 after hundreds of Russian fans charged through a flimsy security cordon at the Stade Velodrome following the final whistle in the 1-1 draw to attack England fans in a violence that marred the Euro 2016 game with England in Marseille on Saturday, UEFA has announced. UEFA on Sunday warned both England and Russia could be thrown out of the tournament if there was a repeat but Tuesday's statement made it clear European football's governing body can only act on clashes that occur inside the ground.
