ARSENAL LOSE CHANCE TO GO TOP

The Gunners were gifted the lead when John Ruddy's poor clearance allowed Alexis Sanchez to set up Mesut Ozil. But the visitors were pegged back by Grabban, who received Robbie Brady's defence-splitting pass and held off the challenge of Gabriel to fire in.
Injuries to Laurent Koscielny and Alexis Sanchez deepened Arsenal's woes.
Centre-back Koscielny was forced off in the first half with a hip injury, while forward Sanchez hobbled off after the interval with an apparent hamstring problem.
The Gunners are now two points off the lead in fourth and manager Arsene Wenger may come under renewed pressure to bolster his squad in January to sustain their title challenge.

Norwich, meanwhile, remain 16th but will be buoyed by a display full of heart and determination.
An evening that could ultimately prove damaging to their title aspirations started well for Arsenal as Ruddy's error gave them a deserved lead.

Before the match, the England goalkeeper had addressed criticism of some recent indifferent performances, saying: "I don't think I have been as good [this season] as I have been previously, but form is temporary."

But his hopes of earning Norwich just a second clean sheet in 14 matches were dashed as he scuffed a clearance to Gary O'Neil. Sanchez nipped in to dispossess the Norwich captain and threaded a through-ball to Ozil, who clipped a deft first-time finish over the goalkeeper.

The stats you need to know

  • Arsenal have conceded six of their 12 goals this season in the 15-minute period before half time.
  • Mesut Ozil has had a hand in 10 of Arsenal's 14 Premier League goals since 4 October (two goals, eight assists).
  • Norwich have managed only one clean sheet in the Premier League this season, a joint league-low total (alongside Bournemouth).
  • Lewis Grabban has not ended up on the losing side in any of the last 24 games in which he has scored (W19 D5) for Norwich and former club Bournemouth - the last time he lost a game in which he scored was back in October 2013.

SIGH OF RELIEF FOR SIASIA

Habeeb Akinfegbe

Dream tean VI began their quest for a spot at next year's olympic games on a winning note with a 3-2 victory over their west African brothers from Mali. Two goals from Junior Ajayi in both halves as well as another from Usman Mohammed gave the one time Olympic champions maximum points and consequently secure top spot in group B.

However, it was not all that rosey for the Nigerians as they almost gave up a three goal advantage in the encounter. Niane and Sissoko spearheaded the comeback which was not to be,
by scoring in the 55th and 66th minute respectively.

In the other group match, Algeria came from behind to draw 1-1 against the dreaded Egyptians who face Samson Siasia's team in their next match on Wednesday, 2nd of December.

FG'S LATEST MOVES ON WELFARE AND EDUCATUION

FG'S LATEST MOVES ON WELFARE AND EDUCATUION
The government explained that the payment has not commenced because it was not captured in the 2015 budget while promising that it will be included in the 2016 budget. This disclosure was made by the minister of youth and sports, Barr. Solomon Darlong when he visited the national secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Abuja, as gathered.
Darlong noted that arrangement for the payment will take effect from 2016. He equally told newsmen that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will fulfill every of his campaign promises including payment of N5, 000 stipends to unemployed Nigerians.

The minister said: “I want the youths to understand that every promise must be backed up by budgetary provision and our promise to pay N5,000 is not contained in the 2015 budget. So, definitely, it is going to begin in 2016 as we have made budgetary allocations for that. We are committed to the campaign promises of creating jobs, providing wealth and combat poverty. We have embedded in our manifesto things that we are translating to reality. Some of the youth empowerment programmes that are ongoing, we are busy reviewing them to ensure that they are more viable and people oriented. We are also looking at the possibility of realigning some of them to our vision so that in the final analysis, it will add value to the people.”

In another but closely relate development in the education sector.
The Punch reported that Buhari said his administration would not cover up anyone found guilty of mismanagement of government funds provided for the ‎upkeep of the nation’s tertiary institutions.
President Buhari
He said this on Wednesday, November 25, at a special convocation ceremony for the installation of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, as the ninth Chancellor of the University of Benin, Edo State.
Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, noted that while his administration was committed to providing funding for the revitalisation of the education sector, “it will not fold it’s arms and watch unscrupulous elements mismanage these very valuable resources. The Federal Ministry of Education is all ears to ensure that wastage and leakages are blocked and perpetrators are brought to book.”

EPL UPDATE: 11 OVER 11 FOR VARDY

EPL UPDATE: 11 OVER 11 FOR VARDY
He already shared the Premier League record of scoring in ten successive games with Ruud van Nistelrooy.
So, it was fitting that it was against Manchester United, with their travelling support singing the old songs in praise of their legendary Dutch striker, that the Sheffield Wednesday reject and alumnus of Stocksbridge Park Steels, who was still playing non-league football three years ago, chose to go one better.
The new record is now eleven successive games and Vardy has actually scored 13 in that run. Yesterday it felt as though he were trampling all over the established order, not just van Nistelrooy. Whilst Vardy was all energy and action, Wayne Rooney looked a much older man than his 30 years at the other end.
vardyThere were a few snapped shots wide, a desperate dive on 35 minutes and an attempt to fling himself at a rebound. But, bruised and seemingly hobbling with a dead leg, he was substituted on 67 minutes. It may not be the case come the summer, but yesterday evening the comparison with his Leicester counterpart and England team-mate was unkind for Rooney.
The Vardy goal when it came was a classic of its kind from Leicester this season. Kasper Schmeichel bowled the ball to Christian Fuchs who advanced upfield to play a raking pass behind United’s extremely shaky back three for Vardy to run onto.
Such is his confidence at present, few inside the King Power Stadium can have doubted the conclusion once the man of the moment began that run.
He simply sprinted across a startled Darmian, took one touch and crashed it past David De Gea.

The stadium fairly erupted as Vardy raced off to celebrate, dashing briefly past the United fans, pointing at his chest and shouting something, presumably along the lines of: ‘I’m the man now.’
And he was but it was not just him. Leicester may have to share top spot with Manchester City after this draw, but their resilience as we approach December is remarkable. They aren’t going away and were magnificent in that first half, when United reverted to their stuttering shapeless alter ego, a parody of their finest sides. And when United improved, as they were almost bound too, Leicester proved equal to their defensive task.

REULTS:

Man City lead with 29 points, followed by Leceister (29) and Man U (28). Arsenal could finish the day with 29 points with a win in today's late kick-off away at Norwich. Chelsea lie in 14th place.

2015 CAF U-23 AFCON UPDATE

Habeeb Akinfegbe

Senegal gladdened the hearts of their fans by beginning their campaign at the CAF U-23 Cup of Nations with a 3-1 win over South Africa on Saturday in Dakar as Tunisia spanked Zambia 2-1 to claim joint top position with the hosts but Senegal remains first due to a goal superiority over the Tunisians.

Ibrahim Keita scored the first goal of the game for Senegal via a penalty in the 16th minute.
Keita made it two for his team in the 22nd minute when he broke away from his markers and powered home a shot after some fantastic passing by Senegal inside the final third of the field.
Siddy Saar made it 3-1 in the 86th minute when he turned swiftly and powered his shot past Ricardo Goss in South African goal.

However, it was Haythem Jouini's brace that gave the Carthage Eagles all three points against their Zambian adversaries. Joini opened scoring after just three minutes but Kampamba equalised on 15 minutes before Jouini grabbed a second on 83rd minute.

Actions move to group B as Egypt face Algeria and Nigeria Mali. Nigeria play her opening game of the CAF Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations, against Mali at the Caroline Faye Stadium in M’bour, Senegal. At stake, is the 2016 Olympic qualification ticket. Having missed the 2012 edition and also missing the chance to win the gold medal at the 2015 Africa Games in Congo, the team coached by Samson Siasia is under pressure to deliver.

The match against Mali will be a true test of their intention of restoring their dignity.
Mali, were whiskers away from beating Nigeria at the Africa Games, but for a late minute goal that rescued a point for the Nigerian team in that encounter. The Malians vowed to fight again at this tournament, even as Siasia groaned about his players inability to convert scoring chances.
But that was then, Siasia has reinforced his team with tested strikers in the mould of Junior Ajayi, Taiwo Awoniyi and FIFA Under-17 goal king Victor Osimhen fresh from his exploits in Chile 2015.

A ten day training stint in Gambia has given the Nigerian team some measure of preparedness and it remains to be seen how they off-laod in their first match of the tournament.
Mali’s strongest point is their resolute defending and their quick counter-attack. They will be coming out strong against the ‘Olympic Eagles’, but Siasia must have taken good notes and knows just what to do to keep the Malians in check.

One man that may give the Nigerians a cause for worry is Nantes’ Adama Niane who emerged as joint top scorer in the qualifiers with four goals. The forward can shoot from long range and can also trouble the defence.

Siasia varies his system depending on the opponent, but usually sets his team up in a 4-3-3 formation or a 4-4-2 which can become as attacking as a 4-2-4 as the game might be.
Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick backed the team to achieve its primary aim at the tournament.

BOY DONATES LIFE SAVINGS TO MOSQUE

A seven-year-old boy opened his heart and his piggy bank to show solidarity for a disrespected mosque in his town. Members of the Islamic Center of Pflugerville, Texas were shocked to find that their prayer site was vandalized when they came to worship on Monday (Nov. 16).

Following the devastating ISIS attacks on Paris, France Friday night (Nov. 13), anti-Muslim sentiments have been gaining fervor across the nation, and in this case, vandals smeared feces on the door of the mosque and on littered pages of the Quran which were scattered across the entry walk to the building.

According to Buzzfeed News, this is the first time local police have ever seen this kind of destruction and are investigating it as a hate crime. This seven-year-old boy named Jack Swanson, upon hearing the news, decided to collect the money from his piggy bank savings — around $20 total — and donate it to the mosque as a show of solidarity.

His mother, Laura, said of the incident to local news station KXAN, “It’sdisgusting. It’s gross. It doesn’t matter what you believe or I believe or what he believes or anybody believes. All faith is important.”A member of the Center’s board, named Faisal Naeem, told Buzzfeed that the gesture warmed his heart and that he and his fellow mosque members are working to get in touch with the boy to give him a holiday gift.“This is very unexpected, and quite honestly quite shocking,” Naeem said of the sight. “If I find the guy or girl who did this, I’d welcome them with open arms.

MEMORY AID

Have you seen the “Black Mirror” episode “The Entire History of You”? The one where an implanted memory chip allows people to rewind, review and relive every moment in their life? Fact, meet fiction.

According to Quartz, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is getting closer to perfecting a wireless “neuroprosthetic” brain implant that will ensure you never forget where your keys are. Restoring Active Memory (RAM) aims to restore the “memory functions of U.S. soldiers retiring from the battlefield with traumatic brain injuries.”

More than300,000members of the military have suffered traumatic brain injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2000, according to DARPA, along with 1.7 million civilians every year. The first step for DARPA is figuring out how neurons in the brain encode memories, after which scientists will develop computer models that can “mimic how the brain functions, with the end goal of being able to implant devices that could trigger those processes if neurons” are damaged,” Quartz reports.

At a September conference called “Wait, What?,” DARPA showed off the results of a study on people undergoing brain surgery who volunteered to get electrode implants and whose scores on memory tests improved thanks to stimulation of the area of the brain used to create things like lists and spacial memory.“Everyone has had the experience of struggling to remember long lists of items or complicated directions to get somewhere,”said DARPA Biological Technologies Office program manager Justin Sanchez. “Today we are discovering how implantable neurotechnologies can facilitate the brain’s performance of these functions.”

ATHLETICS AS A SPORT EVENT

The sport of athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running and race walking.

The results of racing events are decided by finishing position, while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes' performances for a team score, such as cross country.

Organized athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC. The rules and format of the modern events in athletics were defined in Western Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th century, and were then spread to other parts of the world. Most modern top level meetings are conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations and its member federations.

The athletics meeting forms the backbone of the Summer Olympics. The foremost international athletics meeting is the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which incorporates track and field, marathon running and race walking. Other top level competitions in athletics include the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Athletes with a physical disability compete at the Summer Paralympics and the IPC Athletics World Championships.

The word athletics is derived from the Ancient Greekἀθλητής (athlÄ“tÄ“s, "combatant in public games") from ἆθλον (athlon, "prize") or ἆθλος (athlos, "competition"). Initially, the term was used to describe athletic contests in general—i.e.sporting competition based primarily on human physical feats. In the 19th century, the term athletics acquired a more narrow definition in Europe and came to describe sports involving competitive running, walking, jumping and throwing. This definition continues to be the most prominent one in the United Kingdom and most of the areas of the former British Empire.
The Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) was established in England in 1880 as the first national body for the sport of athletics and began holding its own annual athletics competition – the AAA Championships. The United States also began holding an annual national competition – the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships– first held in 1876 by the New York Athletic Club.

Athletics became codified and standardised via the English AAA and other general sports organisations in the late 19th century, such as the Amateur Athletic Union (founded in the US in 1888) and the Union des sociétés françaises de sports athlétiques (founded in France in 1889).

An athletics competition was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and it has been as one of the foremost competitions at the quadrennial multi-sport event ever since. Originally for men only, the1928 Olympics saw the introduction of women's events in the athletics programme. Athletics is part of the Paralympic Games since the inaugural Games in 1960.

Athletics has a very high profile during major championships, especially the Olympics, but otherwise is less popular. An international governing body, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), was founded in 1912; it adopted its current name, the International Association of Athletics Federations, in 2001. The IAAF established separate outdoor World Championships in 1983. In modern times, athletes can receive money for racing, putting an end to the so-called "amateurism" that existed before.

The Comité International Sports des Sourds had been formed by 1922, to govern international deaf sports, including athletics. The first organized international competitions for athletes with a physical disability (not deaf) began in 1952, when the first international Stoke Mandeville Games were organized for World War II veterans. This only included athletes in a wheelchair. This inspired the first Paralympic Games, held in 1960. Competitions would over time be expanded to include mainly athletes with amputations, cerebral palsy and visual impairment, in addition to wheelchair events.

The International Association of Athletics Federations, the sport's governing body, defines athletics in five disciplines: track and field, road running, race walking, cross country running, and mountain running. All forms of athletics are individual sports with the exception of relay races. However, athletes' performances are often tallied together by country at international championships, and in the case of cross country the finishing times of the top athletes from each team or country are combined to declare a team victor.

Track and field competitions emerged in the late 19th century and were typically contested between athletes who were representing rival educational institutions, military organisations and sports clubs. Participating athletes may compete in one or more events, according to their specialities. Men and women compete separately. Track and field comes in both indoor and outdoor formats, with most indoor competitions occurring in winter, while outdoor events are mostly held in summer. The sport is defined by the venue in which the competitions are held – the track and field stadium.

A variety of running events are held on the track which fall into three broad distance categories: sprints, middle-distance and long-distance track events. Relay races feature teams comprising four runners each, who must pass a baton to their team-mate after a specified distance with the aim of being the first team to finish. Hurdling events and the steeplechase are a variation upon the flat running theme in that athletes must clear obstacles on the track during the race.

The field events come in two types – jumping and throwing competitions. In throwing events, athletes are measured by how far they hurl an implement, with the common events being the shot put, discus, javelin and hammer throw.

There are four common jumping events: the long jump and triple jump are contests measuring the horizontal distance an athlete can jump, while the high jump and pole vault are decided on the height achieved.

Combined events, which include the decathlon (typically competed by men) and heptathlon (typically competed by women), are competitions where athletes compete in a number of different track and field events, with each performance going toward a final points tally.

The most prestigious track and field contests occur within athletics championships and athletics programmes at multi-sport events. The Olympic athletics competition and World Championships in Athletics, and the Paralympic athletics competition and IPC World Championships in Athletics, are the highest and most prestigious levels of competition in track and field. Track and field events have become the most prominent part of major athletics championships and many famous athletes within the sport of athletics come from this discipline.

Discrete track and field competitions are found at national championships-level and also at annual, invitational track and field meets. Meetings range from elite competitions – such as those in the IAAF Diamond League series – to basic all comers track meets, inter-sports club meetings and schools events, which form the grassroots of track and field.

A standard outdoor track is in the shape of a stadium, 400 metres in length, and has at least eight lanes 1.22 m in width (small arenas might have six lanes). Older track facilities may have nonstandard track lengths, such as 440 yards (402.3 m; 1/4 mile) (common in the United States). Historically, tracks were covered by a dirt running surface. Modern All-weather running tracks are covered by a synthetic weather-resistant running surface, which typically consists of rubber (either black SBR or colored EPDM granules), bound by polyurethane or latex resins. Older tracks may be cinder-covered.

A standard indoor track is designed similarly to an outdoor track, but is only 200 metres in length and has between four and eight lanes, each with width between 0.90 m and 1.10 m. Often, the bends of an indoor track will be banked to compensate for the small turning radius. However, because of space limitations, indoor tracks may have other nonstandard lengths, such as 160-yard (146.3 m) indoor track at Madison Square Gardenused for the Millrose Games. Because of space limitations, meetings held at indoor facilities do not hold many of athletics events typically contested outdoors.

Since its foundation in 1912, the international governing body for athletics has been the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). It was initially known as the International Amateur Athletics Federation but later changed its name to reflect that the sport had moved away from amateurism towards professionalism in the late 1970s. The IAAF has 213 member nations and territories, which are divided into six continental areas (or area associations). The six association areas are for Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, North America and South America. The sports within athletics do not have their own independent governing bodies at either international or continental level and, instead, all fall under the athletics authorities.

IAAF and its confederations from the six continents are:
AAA –Asian Athletics Association
CAA –Confederation of African Athletics
CONSUDATLE –South American Athletics Confederation
NACACAA –North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association
EAA –European Athletics Association
OAA –Oceania Athletics Association

National level athletics organisations are responsible for the regulation of the sport within their respective countries and most major competitions have some form of permit or approval from their national body.  An example is the AFN (Athletics Federation of Nigeria)

Athletics competitions can be broadly divided into three types: international championships, national championships, and annual meetings and races.

Athletics at international championships, or Games, represent the pinnacle of competition within the sport, and they are contested between athletes representing their country or region. The organisation of these competitions is usually overseen by either a world, continental, or regional athletics governing body. Athletes gain entry into these competitions by earning selection from their national athletics governing body, which is generally done by assessing athletes via their past achievements or performances at a national selection event.

National championships are annual competitions endorsed by a national governing body which serve the purpose of deciding the country's best athlete in each event.

Annual one-day meetings and races form the most basic level of competition and are the most common format of athletics contests. These events are often invitational and are organised by sports organisations, sports promoters, or other institutions. Competitions typically feature only one of the sports within athletics. However, major outdoor international athletics championships and athletics competitions held as part of multi-sport events usually feature a combination of track and field, road running and race walking events.

Athletics Federation of Nigeria is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Nigeria. It is a member of the Confederation of African Athletics and the International Association of Athletics Federations. It was founded as the Central Committee of the Amateur Athletic Association of Nigeria in 1944. The AFN is headquartered at the Nigeria National Stadium in Garki, Abuja.
It organizes the annual AFN Golden League competition which is a domestic competition with a similar format to the now defunct IAAF Golden League. Its president has been Chief Solomon Ogba since 2009.

The general secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mohammed Sanusi, told Goal that the Flamingoes will be camped in Abuja for preparation ahead of their first round qualifier tie by early January.

The NFF scribe said coach Bala Nkiyu will lead the Flamingoes for the upcoming World Cup in Jordan despite his last misadventure in Costa Rica last year. "We are will begin preparation as soon as possible, though we are drawn bye in preliminary stage," Sanusi told Goal.

"The team (Flamingoes) will reopen camp on Sunday (November 29) in Abuja. The previous coaching crew will still remain intact," he said. PINNICK, CHUKWU TALK AHEAD SENEGAL 2015

The 2015 Africa U-23 championship kicks off today in Senegal as the hosts take on South Africa and the Nigeria federation's boss is confident the Dream Team VI can pick one of the three tickets to represent Africa at next year’s Olympic men’s football event. Amaju Pinnick said qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games men’s football event is non-negotiable.

Nigeria U23 begin their campaign for a place in Rio Olympics when they face Mali on Sunday in the 2015 African U23 Championship in Senegal. Having missed out of the 2012 edition, the country’s football federation head has expressed poise in the competence of coach Samson Siasia to lead the Dream Team to Rio. “Presently, we are on a roll of good results and we are determined that those must continue,” Pinnick reportedly said on the NFF website.

“It’s been an exciting past few months during which we have won U-17 World Cup, qualified for the U20 Women’s World Cup and reached the group stage of the African series for the 2018 Fifa World Cup. “The NFF is backing Samson Siasia because he is always keen to succeed. He has brought new, exciting faces to the group and there is confidence all around again. The ticket to the Olympics is non-negotiable” said the NFF President.

Pinnick feels Senegal will prove to be a hunting ground for Nigeria after the Flying Eagles won the 2015 African Youth Championship in March there. “We won the U-20 Cup of Nations in Senegal at the beginning of the year; now, we are back there for the Olympics ticket and the trophy,” he continued. “We will achieve both, because Samson Siasia has put together a crack squad and he has the support of the NFF all the way.”

In a related development, following the late call up given to 2015 FIFA U-17 golden boy, Victor Osimhen, Christian Chukwu feels the forward’s inexperience is not necessarily a problem and says he can flourish in the same way as Pele and Neymar.

Former Nigeria captain Christian Chukwu, exuding similar optimism with Pinick has dismissed the suggestion that Golden Eaglets’ star Victor Osimhen is currently too young to succeed with the Nigeria U23 team. The 2015 Fifa U-17 golden boot and silver ball winner made Samson Siasia’s 21-man squad to the African U23 Championship in Senegal.

In his words “Osimhen is a talented player and he is not too young to play in the Under-23 team,” Chukwu told Punch. He further stated that “many world-class players began at a very young age. Pele and Neymar started playing for the Brazilian senior national team when they were very young. “Osimhen is not even too young to play in the Super Eagles. The Under 23 team is a good place for him to develop and I believe his
participation in the tournament (Senegal 2015) will do him a lot of good as well as helping the team.”

The former Super Eagles head coach also advised the Nigeria U23 team to win their first match against Mali on Sunday to put them in a good position for the title challenge. “The first match of any competition is very important if the team wants to go far. It helps to avoid the trouble of resulting to permutations to leave the group and it also eases pressure off a team in the other matches,” he concluded.

Should Osimhen make Siasia's team against Mali, he would be playing Mali back to back in competitively, following his last game for the U-17 in Chile in the final against Mali. the top three team at the 2015 African Youth Championship will represent Africa at the Rio 2016

men’s football event.
