AHEAD RWANDA 2016: ANGOLA HOLD SUPER EAGLES

The home-based Super Eagles played a 1-1 draw against Angola in an international friendly game today. The game which was part of preparation for both teams ahead of the Championship for African Nations in Rwanda, was played behind closed doors inside the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa. Angola finished as runner-up at the second African Nations Championship in Sudan five years ago, while Nigeria finished in third place at the third edition in South Africa in 2014.

The first goal of the game was scored by Bartholomew Ibenegbu from the penalty spot in the 84th minute after Ibrahim Salawu was fouled in the 18-yard box. But on 88 minutes, the Angolans equalized from a corner-kick. The Angolans earlier had the chance to take the lead on the 45th minute but missed a penalty of their own. The Home Eagles will take on Cote d'Ivoire in their next international friendly game at the same Tuks University Stadium on January 11 and fly into Rwanda on January 15.

The team will begin their campaign in the CHAN on January 18 against neighbours, Niger Republic, at the astro-turf Stade Regional Nyamirambo on the outskirts of Kigali.
Nigeria will also play Tunisia and Guinea in Group C, with the match against the Guineans scheduled for the city of Rubavu.

On Tuesday, the Eagles beat South African Premier League side, University of Pretoria 3-0 in a tune-up game. It was the first of the friendly games lined up for the team ahead of the African Nations Championship, which kicks off on January 16 in Kigali, Rwanda.

However, Nigeria is facing a major injury crisis as key forwards, Tunde Adeniji and Chisom Chikatara were reportedly doubtful for the game. Adenji, who scored a brace in Tuesday's 3-0 win against University of Pretoria, was replaced in the game due to a muscle strain complaint.
Abia Warriors hitman Chikatara was suffering from a hamstring problem. The two strikers who played key roles for their clubsides in the Glo Premier League last season are expected to shoulder the goal scoring responsibilities for the Eagles after skipper of the team, Gbolahan Salami, dumped them for a move abroad.
